On 15 November 2022, a discussion on “Introduction of the Extended Producer Responsibility system in the framework of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA)” was held at Manoogian Hall of the American University of Armenia(AUA).
During the event, the prospects of implementation of the EPA system in Armenia were discussed, the opinions of local and international experts in the field, the challenges and the lessons learned by countries with similar experiences were presented, and local initiatives for sustainable waste management were talked about. Furthermore, the role of public relations and education in increasing the efficiency of the waste management process and changing the behavior of the public was presented.
Extended producer responsibility systems ensure the management of post-consumption waste (tires, batteries, packaging, etc.) of specific products brought to market by manufacturers or importers. Waste management is one of the most important components of the circular economy and the environmental agenda, which aims to reduce the impact of products on the environment by making the producer responsible for the entire production process.
Chargé d’Affaires of the USA Chip Laitinen, John Gallagher, the UK Ambassador to the Republic of Armenia, Ambassador of Sweden to the Republic of Armenia Patrick Svensson, Deputy Minister of Environment of the Republic of Armenia Tigran Gabrielyan, and others welcomed the attendees and spoke about the importance of the discussed topic. The representatives of “The American Chamber of Commerce in Armenia”, AUA Acopian Center for the Environment and “The Armenian-British Business Chamber” NGOs, “RWA Group” and “Parpounas Sustainability Consultants” referred to the projects of implementation of EPA systems in Armenia, after which international experts talked about similar experiences in other countries.
